Tony DuMoulin: Retired

Tony DuMoulin was one of the founders of DuMoulin Boskovich LLP. He was called to the bar in 1972, and practiced mainly in the areas of real estate development and corporate and commercial law. He had particular skill in negotiating and documenting complex commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, finance, licensing, and real estate transactions. In recent years Tony’s experience led him to focus on advising for business owners, including: wills, trusts, corporate reorganizations, acquisitions and dispositions, leasing and ownership succession planning. When Tony reitred at the end of 2011, he left his practice in the capable hands of his Business Law partners, Joshua Hauser and Peter Kletas.

Tony had been a leader in real estate law and practice. He was responsible for the drafting and implementation of the standard real estate contract currently used by licensed realtors in British Columbia. He had also co-authored and revised the B.C. Real Estate Association’s Clauses and Phrases Booklet used by the Province’s realtors in preparing contracts of purchase and sale, and he drafted a key amendment to the real estate contract necessitated by a significant Court of Appeal decision. Tony had also been a consultant to the Real Estate Council of B.C. in the drafting of the Licensee Practice Manual, and was also consulted in connection with the Strata Property Act.

Tony was a legal drafting instructor for many years with the Legal Assistant Program at Capilano Community College in North Vancouver, and had frequently contributed to educational programs for the B.C. Real Estate Association, the Society of Notaries Public, the Law Society’s articling students, and the Continuing Legal Education Society. As a legal educator, he had a particular interest in current approaches to legal drafting, favouring a clear and plain style in dealing with complex commercial concepts. Tony had written on various legal topics, including a regular article on legal issues in the Notaries’ magazine, “The Scrivener”.

Tony was born in Vancouver, and holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia. After graduating he articled with a firm of solicitors in London, England, where he worked with an international client base and gained experience with global licensing agreements. Immediately following his articles, he began practicing law with his U.B.C. law school classmate, Joe Boskovich, and three other classmates, and he continued this practice until he retired at the end of December, 2011.

Tony was always actively involved in community affairs. He was a founding director of the Cheshire Home Society of British Columbia, which provides housing for the severely disabled; and has been a director and executive member of both the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia and the Vancouver Youth Theatre, as well as other non-profit organizations, such as the McCreary Centre Society, which is concerned with the advancement of youth health issues, and he was the legal advisor to a number of affordable housing organizations in the lower mainland. He is a past Vice-Chair of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region, where he remains active with inter-faith matters, and a past President of, and legal advisor to, PAL (Peforming Arts Lodge) Vancouver, a charitable society operating an affordable housing project in Coal Harbour for members of the performing arts industry.
