Underinsured Motorist Protection
In one of our earlier pieces we encouraged readers to examine their third party liability coverage on their own automobile insurance policies [link]. However, what if you or the members of your household are injured in an accident caused by a driver who carries inadequate coverage? There is a simple inexpensive step you can take to increase your protection in that unfortunate event – excess UMP (Underinsured Motorist Protection).
Every Basic Autoplan policy through ICBC provides $1,000,000 of UMP coverage automatically. For a small annual fee, however, you can double the coverage to $2,000,000. This covers you regardless of what vehicle you are riding in and it covers members of your household riding in any vehicle, except ones they own. Excess UMP also covers you and members of your household if you are a pedestrian or cyclist when injured by an at-fault underinsured driver.
Don’t rely on others to carry an appropriate level of insurance. Remember to ask your broker about excess UMP next time you renew your insurance.
